Monroe Salt Works Collection
Monroe Salt Works continues the ancient art of salt glazing, developed in fifteenth century Europe. Now, as then, handfuls of rock salt are thrown directly into a white-hot kiln. The salt vapor combines with the firing pots to create the pottery's unique and distinct glaze.
There are always surface and color variations in the pieces from a salt glaze kiln. Some pieces receive a large amount of salt vapor glaze and other pieces are only lightly coated. The texture and color of each piece will vary according to where it was located in the kiln. It is this variation that makes Monroe Salt Works pottery so rich and compelling. No two pieces are ever alike and each represents the age-old technique kept alive in the kilns at Monroe Salt Works in Monroe, Maine.
