Deruta, located in the center of Umbria has been producing Majolica for six-hundred years. There are several patterns produced in this area. The well-known patterns Rafaellesco (dragon) and Ricco emerged during the Renaissance period. Their details were inspired by the paintings and frescoes of Raffaelo and Purgino. The Arabesco pattern is based on Persian calligraphy from the seventeenth century. Most are painted with a bird or pair of birds, though some can be found with a deer or hare.
